Happy Wednesday friends 🙂 Can you believe the week is almost over!! Today I am so excited to be introducing you all to a very good blog friend of mine: Katie of The Style Dunce. Katie’s posts are always optimistic, and usually have me cracking up at my computer screen for hours! We first bonded over our mutual love for the Real Housewives series on Bravo, because we both can’t get enough of those dramatic ladies. But now, I’ll let you all get the deets on Katie from the fab blogger herself…
First off, tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog!
Hello! Well I’ve always loved writing so I started The Style Dunce in May after some relentless pressure by my bestie Crystal over at The Happy Type. While it began as somewhat of a fashion blog (seriously, I’d update maybe once a week and it’d always be outfit posts), it’s now turned into much more of a personal blog where I write about my own life as a twenty-something as well as pop-culture, and, of course, style and beauty.
Your blog’s name is pretty unique! Tell us how you came up with it and how it reflects your personality?
When I first started brainstorming names, I knew I wanted my blog name to be like a signature because I knew I didn’t want my full name attached to the blog. But I also wanted it to be self-deprecating so people would know coming in that I don’t take myself very seriously. Since I dropped out of fashion school, I thought “dunce” was fitting. And I kind of waffled between using “fashion” or “style” but “style” won out because I thought it denotes more of a lifestyle blog than just a fashion blog!
What inspired you to start blogging, and where do you find inspiration for your posts?
For the past two years, I’ve worked as a newspaper reporter which is a whole different type of writing than blogging, so I loved the idea of having my own space to write the way I wanted to write. My natural voice is definitely more sarcastic than what I was able to write, even in creative articles, for the newspaper.
For my posts, I’d say I find inspiration in daily activities and interactions. I’ve found with my favorite bloggers that whatever their topic, they find some way to keep it relevant to the here and now, and I definitely used to just write about the most random things on any given day without giving any context as to why I was writing about it.
If there was one thing that you could accomplish in the next 10 years – no limitations here – what would you want it to be?!
I would love to transition from having my own personal blog into an actual online magazine. I know, right? Isn’t that the thing to do these days? But I have a journalism degree so I definitely want to put it to use. Part of me also really wants to get back into hard news, because I would definitely get a rush reporting on big news, so maybe the no limitations goal should be winning a Pulitzer Prize for a news story. Hah. I can’t even type that with a straight face.
You share a lot about your personal style trends on your blog. What are some current trends you can’t get enough of and some that you could do without?
I love that leather is apparently big this fall, so I can just dream of wearing leather skinny pants, because I absolutely love how they look with loose sweaters. Also, love you, leopard print. I have my eyes on a leopard print bag by Fossil, right now.
I just don’t know that I’ll ever really get into turtlenecks though. I automatically feel 10 years older when I put one on. And I hate coats with ¾ sleeves. I mean I think they are adorable, but you would always have to wear the right outfit under it or buy cute gloves to go with it. They’re just not very functional.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and who would you take?
I would love to travel to Spain. Everyone I know who has been there has absolutely loved it. I’d probably take my boyfriend with me, because I’d love to experience something new like that with him. But I also think it’d be fun to have a “girls” trip with my mom, sister, and two cousins. (Or we could just go to Vegas).
